January 23rd Weekly Newsletter

January 23, 2015
Dear Parents,
Principal’s Report—January 21, 2015
New Assessment and Report Card Implementation This week, Kindergarten through Grade 9 students across the Calgary Board of Education including at Elboya School will bring home a new, common format Report Card. It will be given twice a year in January and June. For each subject, 4-6 outcomes have been identified and achievement indicator of: 4 (Excellent) 3 (Good) 2 (Basic)  1 (Not Meeting)  will be assigned by teachers. These indicators are based on the body of work that a student has produced since September with emphasis on recent achievement and growth. Comments by teachers will appear at the end of the report card for students in Kindergarten to Grade 4 and after each subject for students in grades 5-9. Most report cards will have 2s or 3s and comments will say what a student can currently do and where the student can improve.
The Calgary Board of Education has published a Parent’s Guide to Assessment and Reporting, which is attached to this document and available at the following link, https://portal.cbe.ab.ca/staffinsite/teaching/assessment/Documents/reporting_Parent_Guide .pdf
During the past few months, teachers have spent a significant amount of time discussing the new marking system with students. One of the significant changes has been the emphasis on continuous formative assessment, where student work is evaluated and feedback provided without marks attached. Another is the assignment of indicators rather than percentages. A final or summative assessment occurs towards the end of units. In this way students have the opportunity to understand and correct their work before being awarded marks or achievement indicators.
This is a new process for all of us.  I hope that we will be able to learn and improve the system for next year.  We will be inviting parents to offer feedback following interviews.
We look forward to meeting with parents again at the upcoming Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews on January 29th and 30th, 2015.  Details about booking conferences are attached to this email. We request that parents make every effort to book time with teachers DURING interview times.  Due to the very high demand for interviews, we request that parents 1 appointment/family/teacher.  Schools may only use 3 days and 3 evenings to meet with parents regarding achievement. For students in Kindergarten through Grade 6, one of the sets of interviews must be in September. I added in an additional day for grades 5-6 in November.
Increasingly we are seeing requests to meet on different days because families are taking vacations time during interviews. It is very difficult for a teacher to see 15 or more parents outside of interview times as happened at the last interviews to a number of teachers.
Working Together Students, parents and staff are very concerned about each student’s success and achievement. In the best interests of a student, we all must work together respectfully. It is an essential life skill for a student to learn to speak with their teacher. Students learn how to do this over time and is a skill best developed before a student goes into high school.
If there is a question or concern, students and/or their parents need to speak first with the teacher. We all need to listen to and seek to understand each other and then look at solutions, which will help the student be successful.  If a concern is unresolved after speaking with a teacher, students or parents are invited to make an appointment to meet with an administrator. Any questions or concerns about support staff should always be directed to the principal.
Awards It is our intention to continue to offer awards at Elboya School. Assemblies will be on February 10th for grades 5-6 and 7-9. Some awards are available to all students. Some are academic and some are not.  All students are eligible for awards.
Fierte de la Langue—for consistently speaking French in classes (no limit) Elboya Outstanding Citizenship Award--excellent citizen and helps others 1/class Most Improved—for students who have demonstrated significant improvement  Outstanding Academic Achievement—1 boy and 1 girl/class   Honours—for academic excellence in all classes to students who have primarily 4s and their teacher’s recommendation (no limit)
Learning, Teaching and Technology At the Elboya School Council Meeting on January 21, 2014, Ms. Erin Hansen, Learning Leader of the Learning Commons, Technology and English Language Arts spoke about the goals of a Library Learning Commons. Of particular importance to students is transliteracy or the ability to effectively and knowledgeably communicate across a variety of platforms-print or non-print or electronic. A summary of Ms. Hansen’s comments follows my report.
By the end of June 2015, Elboya School will have completely updated our technology in the past two years. Our focus throughout this plan has been using technology to further student learning. Parents have seen some of these through the use of Google Apps and other resources. I note that our previous project was the installation of SMARTboards in most classrooms in the school three years ago.
Certainly there have been a number of bumps along the way and I anticipate that there will be in the future.  The demand for wireless has increased exponentially in the past few years.  So have the devices that everyone, including children as young as those in Grade 4,
carry. This intersection has created significant challenges as we’ve tried to provide access in a safe and secure environment.
Our initial decision three years ago was to move to an Apple Platform. These computers last longer, require much less technical service, are more secure and generally are more familiar to students who have grown up with ipods, iphones and ipads. We now have 4 carts of 27 laptops each with one on the top floor, the main floor, in the elementary wing and in the Learning Commons.  Teachers also have new Mac laptops. Some learning disabled students also have a laptop from the school. More than 80% of the school’s computers are less than 1½ years old.  In addition, we purchased a few ipads, but to date have not expanded in this direction due to school board restrictions. A new MAC school server was installed last year. The school’s computer hard connection was also upgraded. We have also just received the 3 D printer, which we ordered last spring. Along with the hardware, we have purchased needed software.
The last two elements of our plan will be finished by the end of June 2015 are: -adding projectors/SMARTboards in a final 4 classrooms  -installing a wireless access in every classroom in the two story section of the school.  (This will be our third and most comprehensive wireless upgrade.)
The completion of our technology plan is the result of the collaboration of the Elboya Fundraising Society, the school, and the Calgary Board of Education. When all costs are considered, each group has contributed equally. I would like to extend the thanks of the students and staff to all parents and especially those who have contributed in any way to the Elboya Fundraising Society for their very significant contributions.
A reminder that painting begins at Elboya School on February 2, 2015 and lasts till the end of March. This will occur during school hours. We ask for your patience as we receive this much-needed upgrade to our school’s appearance.
Safety and Security Events in Canada and the world are causing all of us to think more about safety. We are fortunate in the location of our school and in the desire of students, staff, and parents to have a safe environment for children. Schools are not public buildings. Daily we have requests from the public to use washrooms, tour the school though they are not prospective parents, etc. The variety of requests is astonishing.
We need and very much appreciate your cooperation in preserving the safety of children. Elboya is a complex school with a wide range of students from children in Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 9 students. Children in grades up to and including grade 6 are required to be under the supervision of an adult at all times. The information below is shared so that we can all work to ensure student safety.
-The school opens at 7:30 for students in grades 6-9 who have practices at 7:40 and who are directly under the supervision of a specific teacher.  -The Main Office opens at 8:15.
-Supervision for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 begins at 8:35 a.m. -The school opens for all students at 8:40. -Traffic safety is the responsibility of all adults who drive around the school.  –-Pedestrian safety is the responsibility of adults and students. -Parents of young children are welcome to take their child to their classroom.  -Parents are requested to leave when the warning bell rings at 8:45 as teachers are responsible to begin instruction at 8:50 a.m.  -Once school has started at 8:50 a.m., entrance is only through the Main Entrance on 6th St. S. W.  -Any adult entering the building between 8:50 and 3:30 must sign in at the Main Office.   -Any student leaving the school needs to sign out by showing a note to their teacher or having a parent sign the student out.  -Parents do not have to sign a student in. -Adults may not enter classrooms during the school day unless the adult and teacher have agreed that the individual is volunteering and wearing a Visitor’s Pass.  -Adults must have completed an annual volunteer form and an approved police clearance to work with students in class, on fieldtrips or with teams or clubs. -Please do not slip in through an open door during class hours or open doors for someone one. If it is cold, parents are welcome to wait inside the Main Entrance. -Discipline of students is ONLY by school staff. -School ends at 3:30 p.m. -Parents are requested to have a set place to meet their child after school.  -Students need to be picked up by 3:40 p.m. when supervision for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 ends.  -Please call the Main Office, if pick up is late so that a student may wait safely in the Main Office.  -The Main Office closes at 3:00 p.m. -For students at practices, access ends at 4:45 p.m.  We request the cooperation of students and parents in attending to any matters during the appropriate school hours.
Thank you for your support of the students and staff at Elboya School.
Sincerely,
Linda Davis, Principal

Learning Commons - E. Hansen
We are working hard to transform Elboya's library to embrace a learning commons framework.  This does involve changing the configuration of the space, but more importantly, it emphasizes supporting teaching and learning.   A learning commons is a whole school approach to building a participatory learning community. The library learning commons is the physical and virtual collaborative learning hub of the school. It is designed to engineer and drive future-oriented learning and teaching throughout the entire school. Inquiry, project/problem-based learning experiences are designed as catalysts for intellectual engagement with information, ideas, thinking, and dialogue. Reading thrives, learning literacies and technology competencies evolve, and
critical thinking, creativity, innovation and playing to learn are nourished. Everyone is a learner; everyone is a teacher working collaboratively toward excellence. ~Leading Learning: Standards Of Practice For School Library Learning Commons In Canada, Canadian Library Association (CLA) 2014.
Alberta Education Policy (2014) states:  To support students in attaining the goals and standards as stated in the Ministerial Order on Student Learning, school authorities must ensure that students have access to a learning commons. A learning commons is an inclusive, flexible, learner-centred, physical and/or virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play to expand and deepen learning.
Skills such as transliteracy (the ability to effectively and knowledgeably communicate across a variety of platforms), digital citizenship, information seeking skills and collaborative learning will be emphasized.   We seek to enhance both our physical and digital resource collection and assist all learners to have the skills to effectively search for and knowledgeably use information to collaborate and create.

Canadian Parents for French CPF is holding a French family fun weekend February 27th, 28th and March 1st. in Jasper.   For more information regarding the weekend go to http://ab/cpf/ca/activites/calendar/  CPF is an excellent resource for parents and students. http://ab/cpf.ca  If you are interested in more information please contact Nancy Paton npaton@shaw.ca who is a parent here at Elboya and our liaison for CPF.
Elboya’s MakerSpace option! - S. Matheusik We have the pleasure to finally be using our 3D printer and the learning commons is a buzz with activity!   The grade 8 MakerSpace option has been hard at work designing objects using programs like 123D design and tinkerCAD to draw 3D objects of their choice. They have drawn items such as cars and flowers!  Once the items are completed, we have been using the MakerBot software to convert these designs into STL files that are suitable to print.  Over the last few weeks, we have seen models of Pikachu, calculator, giraffes and octopi come to life!   As the year goes forward, we’re anticipating using the printer in a variety of ways to challenge student creativity and problem solving!

Traffic – L. Davis
As the weather has worsened and snow has piled up, concerns about the safety of children around the school are being called into the school. Unfortunately there is a small group of drivers who are choosing their personal convenience rather than the safety of children.  Specific areas of concern expressed are:  -excessive speed in the school/playground zone  -U-turns in the school zone  -driving through stop signs  -parking in cross walks  -47th street—many issues  If you observe unsafe driving, would you please note the licence number of the vehicle and call the school AND 311 and inform both the school and the city or police of the specific issues. School Patrols begin on 47th Avenue and 6th Street will begin on Monday, February 2, 2015 following training of students by the police constable in charge of School Patrols. Additional signage will go up in the spring. I have requested that the south side of 47th Avenue be signed for Pick Up/Drop Off only.  Staff at school has worked with students to ensure that they have a good understanding of how to proceed safely. We need everyone’s help to keep students safe.  I respectfully request that all drivers exercise additional caution and care during these winter months.

School Registration
We are now taking registrations for the 2015-2016 school year. If your child attends Elboya at this time you do not need to re-register.  Registration for the French Immersion and the Intensive French programs will take place after February 5th.

Parent/Teacher Conferences – D. Siakaluk
Parent/Teacher Conferences are on January 29 and 30. Information about how to book conferences is on the website and information was sent home with the report card. These meetings are an opportunity to discuss your child's progress, strengths and areas of growth with their teacher(s). It is encouraged to bring your child with you to these conferences so they can be part of the process. It is important to attend conferences as it can be difficult for teachers to arrange alternate times to meet.

Day Home Anyone?
With the new school year starting in September of 2015 we are wondering if any parent within the area is planning to open a day home in the fall. We have had parent inquiries regarding Kindergarten aged students and care. Care for students only attending a half day of Kindergarten. Parents are looking for accommodations that would fit in with their specific Kindergarten schedule. If you feel you would be providing a daycare service of this type please call me at (403) 777-7760 ext 0. Thank you!

The Rocky Mountain Book Award – B. Sadler
The Rocky Mountain Book Award is a readers’ choice program, which invites students to choose the best book from a shortlist. This Alberta-based program is designed to motivate and stimulate the reading interests of students in grades 4-7. Students and educators are invited to read exemplary Canadian literature, and then the students vote for their favorite book.  They are to read 5 out of the 20 short listed books if they choose to participate.  Books can also be read as a read aloud to an entire class.  The books vary in length and genre, so there is something for everyone.  We have many students that are participating individually and within the class.  Students will vote for their favourite book in April 2015.

Band Clinics - W. Irwin
Band clinics for grade 8 and 9 students Friday January 23.  AIBF band festival dates for Concert Band (Grade 8 and 9) Thursday February 19, 4:00pm at Rosza Centre University of Calgary - Free performance - public welcome AIBF Jazz band (Grades 7-9) March 11 - Mount Royal University 12:00pm - Free Performance - Public welcome.

Lates/Attendance – D. Siakaluk A reminder to all parents to please call the attendance line in the main office if your child will be absent or late. Telling the teachers can be helpful; however, it is critical that the main office knows. Every time a student will be absent or late, we ask you to call the school.
Some students still continue to arrive late to school. Students need to be at school by 8:45 so they can be in their homeroom at 8:50. A reminder that traffic is often bad in the morning and we need parents who drive their children to school to plan accordingly. Late Club is held after school for students who are often late or have no excuse. Appointments, bad weather, late buses, etc. do not result in late club.

January 16, 2015 Weekly Newsletter

January 16, 2015

Dear Parents,
Report Cards will be coming home a week today. Staff has worked diligently this year to adjust to the new reporting systems. Teachers have spoken with students about the meaning of the new system in the context of each student’s work.  I have sent a number of communications to parents about the new report card.  A Parent Guide to the new assessment system can be located at
http://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/assessment-and-reporting/Documents/ParentsGuide-Assessment-and-Reporting.pdf
A few very important pieces of information:
1. The report card describes the student’s achievement based on their body of work completed since September 2014 with an emphasis on what a student has shown he or she has achieved recently.
2. In each subject, there are 3-6 outcomes, which are to be assessed by a teacher. For example in English Language Arts, the teacher gives a number for each of reading, writing, constructing meaning, representing ideas. From these, a student and parent more easily understand a student’s areas of strength where they need to work to improve. Probably the most important number on the report card is the reading indicator. Without fluent reading skills, a child struggles and cannot excel. Every student from Kindergarten through Grade 9 should read daily for 10 (K-3) to 20 (Grades 4-9) minutes.
3. The descriptors for the numbers are significant and describe a student’s achievement of grade level expectations as published by Alberta Education:
a. 1 = Not meeting (lacks understanding or knowledge or skills to complete work, successful in rehearsed or highly structured learning)
b. 2 = Basic (adequate or simple understanding, uses knowledge and skills to do common learning tasks, successful in familiar learning situations)
 c. 3 = Good (demonstrates an in-depth and well-developed understanding and uses knowledge and skills in a variety of learning tasks, successful in familiar and new learning situations)
d. 4 = Excellent (demonstrates a thorough and subtle understanding and uses knowledge and skills to engage in complex learning tasks and in novel, diverse and unique learning situations)
4. It is very important NOT to equate the new 1, 2, 3 and 4 to percentages.  The two are not the same.
5. A crucial area in which to work with your child is reading. Please be sure to talk with your child about their achievement and look at recent evidence of achievement such tests, quizzes, assignments or projects.

Traffic
As the weather has worsened and snow has piled up, concerns about the safety of children around the school are being called into the school.  Unfortunately there is a small group of drivers who are choosing their personal convenience rather than the safety of children.
Specific areas of concern expressed are:
-excessive speed in the school/playground zone
-U-turns in the school zone
-driving through stop signs
-parking in cross walks -47th street—many issues
If you observe unsafe driving, would you please note the licence number of the vehicle and call the school AND 311 and inform both the school and the city or police of the specific issues.
Thank you for your help in these very important matters and for your support and help with your child and in the school.

January 9, 2015 Weekly newsletter

January 9, 2015

Dear Parents,

This week we welcomed Mme. Matheusik back from maternity leave.  It's great to have her back. We also said goodbye to Mr. Wong who has been at Elboya since school started in a number of capacities.

Grade 3 Student Learning Assessments were given in October 2014.  Recently the Calgary Board of Education was informed that results from those tests will not be provided to either parents or the school. Feedback to teachers has been limited to a brief summary and is not printable. As parents may be aware, the SLAs are still in the pilot mode. Alberta Education is still working on the SLAs.

Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests

It has not yet been decided if Grade 6 students will write Provincial Achievement Tests in June 2015 though I am anticipating that Grade 6 students will write. Teachers are preparing students to write the tests. As soon as this decision has been made, I will be sharing it with teachers, parents and students.

On January 23, 2015, the first of the two report cards for 2014-15 will issues.  I hope that parents will talk with their child (ren) about the new grading system as teachers have discussed the new system in detail with students.  Previously I have shared information from the CBE website which may be located at the links below:

Parents’ guide http://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/assessment-and-reporting/Documents/Parents-Guide-Assessment-and-Reporting.pdf

We look forward to meeting with parents and students on January 29th and 30th to discuss student progress and achievement.

Elboya Band Bottle Drive – Mr. W. Irwin

The Elboya school band parents are hosting the annual January bottle drive this Saturday, January 10th. . The bottle drive starts at 9:00 am. Bottles will be picked up within Elboya and parts of Windsor Park. Bottles may be brought to the staff parking lot and dropped off starting at 9:00 am. Anyone can drop off bottles in the staff parking lot. Please drop bottles off by the East Jr. High doors entrance at the end of the parking lot. Bottles will be picked up between 12:00 - 1:00 pm.

There could be a number of cars going in and out of the parking lot. I would like to ask if it would be possible to park on the north side of the lot so access can be safe and easy for all.
