Grade 9 Transition to High School
Today we were pleased to host M. Martin Poirier principal of Western Canada High School who, along with Mme. Godin-Fortin and two former Elboya students, Kaila F. and Sabinne S. spoke with Grade 9 students. I appreciate M. Poirier taking the time to come to Elboya.
Grade 9 students are looking forward to visiting Western next week for the Grade 9 annual tour.
We distributed to each grade 9 student the general CBE handout, 2016-17 Get Ready – Get Set – Go For it: Learn more about high school and plan for your success as well. Online resources about high schools are:

Western Canada Tour – M. Comeau

Western Canada’s Open house and General information session will be November the 18th from 5:45 to 6:30 followed by the Western International Baccalaureate Program Information Night from 6:30 to 7:30. The invitation from Western was sent to parents on Friday, 6 November, 2015 and is attached again.
Virtual Learning Commons – M. Haines
The Virtual Learning Commons is found at
https://sites.google.com/a/educbe.ca/vlc/
At this site, parents can locate a school calendar, a blog from each teacher for their class and dates of assignments and tests. We invite parents to consult it regularly.
Home Logic M. Comeau
Elboya School is using Home Logic, which shows student’s marks and assessments available to parents. Parents are encouraged to login and check their access. Instructions are found at http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b627/pdfs/HomeLogic-FAQ-for-Parents.pdf
If parents are having difficulties with logging in, please call the Main Office at 403 777-7760 ext. 0 and speak with Mrs. Block.
Remembrance Day
Thanks to the Drama 9 students and Ms. Park who put on two Remembrance Day Assemblies on November 10, 2015 for students and staff. We all appreciated the opportunity to remember those who have sacrificed for us. Mr. Grove created a display of photographs of some veterans and makes the following comment: Canada is truly an amazing country largely due to the sacrifice of our soldiers. As the Great Wars were a long time ago and we are slowly losing more and more of our veterans, it becomes even more important to share these photos and experiences. There were many amazing photos brought in and you can tell there is a lot of pride from the letters or notes attached with them. I can’t speak for anyone else, but it certainly made me pause and made Remembrance Day more personal seeing everyone’s contribution. I will have the display up for the next little while to continue to highlight Remembrance Day, as a single day/week/month is not nearly enough.
Student Parent Teacher Interviews—November 19 and 20, 2015

If you are using an older browser, the Conference Manager will ask you to update your browser and provide you with a link. This is a one-time process and only takes a couple of minutes.
Please make sure to add appointments@schoolsoft.com to your contact list so emails from Conference Manager do not end up in your trash or junk folders.

WE Day Club – C. Galloway
The WE DAY Club at Elboya has just launched a fundraiser called “Zinc Saves Lives”. Each homeroom was given a container to fill with dead batteries. At the end of November the containers will be collected.
Zinc is found in most everyday foods and we eat it so often we don’t know or think about it. Zinc can be found in foods like nuts, spinach, pumpkin seeds, beef and lamb. Each year, nearly 450,000 children die due to lack of consuming enough zinc. One AA battery contains the amount of zinc that can save the lives of six children.
The company TECK has partnered with Call2Recycle to help keep batteries out of landfills and help get zinc to the children who need it most. For every battery recycled, Teck will donate the value of zinc it contains to UNICEF in support of our Zinc & Health partnership.
