November 21, 2014

Dear Parents,

On November 18th, Grade 9 students and the Grade 9 teachers at Elboya School toured Western Canada High School as part of the preparation to transition to high school.  Western is Elboya School’s designated high school.  Each grade 9 student also received on Monday, November 17th, the booklet, 2015-16 Get Ready Get Set Go For It, a new Calgary Board of Education booklet on high school.  This booklet and other information about high school may be located at:
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/high-school-registration.asp
Next steps for grade 9 students are to consider whether they wish to apply for the International Baccalaureate Program. Further information including the application form is found at http://www.cbe.ab.ca/Programs/prog-enrich.asp
IB is a program of academic challenge or enrichment.  Students who are considering making an application need to speak with their teachers.

IB applications are due at Elboya School’s Main Office at Fri., January 9th, 2015.

Elboya School forwards the applications to the IB program.
I anticipate that a counselor from Western will meet with Elboya students sometime in February or March for course selections.  Further information will follow.

Calgary Board of Education photographers were at Elboya School on Tuesday, November 18th to photograph classes and students for the CBE image repository. Only those students with signed permission forms from parents were photographed.  The request of Elboya was French and Band classes in grades 5 and up.

Movember is the fundraising opportunity of choice this month and today students sported moustaches to support this effort. Many thanks to students in Ms. Bly’s Grade 4, Ms McBean’ Grade 5/6 homeroom, Mrs. Park’s Grade 7-9 homeroom and drama students who are running this month’s events including the painting on of the moustaches. House points were awarded for participating. There is also the opportunity up to November 26th, for a modest contribution, to identify staff photographed with moustaches.

Thanks once more to the many parents who support students at Elboya School by supervising field trips, contributing to the grocery fundraiser or Oktoberfest and in many other ways.

Principal

Library Learning Commons Club
We are starting a new student club in our Library Learning Commons. If your son or daughter has an interest in learning more about how a Learning Commons functions and participating in brainstorming ideas, providing student voice and completing some easy tasks, we would love to have them!  Organizational meetings will be Tuesdays at lunch (12:35) in the learning commons.  See Mrs. Hansen for more information.

Lates and Late Club – Mr. Siakaluk
Students arriving late to school continue to be a concern at Elboya and now that the weather has turned lates can become more common. Developing the habit of being on time is extremely important and critical for the workforce. On Monday, administration will implement a late club for students who are late. Students in grades 5-9 who arrive late need to stay after school for 30 minutes to make up for missed time. Just to clarify – late club will be for students who have an unexcused late. This does not include late school buses, extreme weather, traffic or appointments. This is for students who have chronic late concerns or who arrive to school late with no valid reason.

If your child is late to school and is in Grades K-4, they report directly to Ms. Jones who will record their name. If your child is in Grades 5-9 then they need to sign in the late book. We ask all parents to say their goodbyes outside the school or in the office. Parents are asked not to accompany their students to their classroom as this can be very disruptive to classes.

Dressing for Winter
Please be sure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Jackets, toques, mitts, scarves, boots, snow pants, etc. are highly recommended.

November 4, 2014

Dear Parents,
We apologize for the lateness of this message.
On behalf of the students and staff of Elboya School, I would like to express our appreciation to parents and staff who contributed to the success of Oktoberfest. Special thanks are due to Rhonda Fulton and her committee. Rhonda stepped in at the last minute and did an excellent job of bringing off a highly successful and enjoyable event. The Oktoberfest Committee included Rhonda Fulton, Kahleia Murdoch, Maxine Edwards, Ginny Brown, Virginia Harvie, Lyne Schneider, Karen Kirk, Samara Felesky-Hunt, Elaine & Duncan Dube, Kim Snethun, Heather & Don Marples, Lorri Delong, Lori McArthur, Pam Winters, Beth Riley, Doug Dunlop, Rhonda Dupuis. Special thanks also go to Jim Button, Peter Edwards, Norm Dupuis and Angela Roehm.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed.
Linda Davis, Principal
Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest was a huge success!  Thank you to our 224 guests who attended the festivities and to the hundreds of families, teachers and businesses who donated cash, time and auction items.  Clearly the support to ensure our school’s success is present and appreciated.
Okotoberfest requires so much of our school community, starting with the bottles of wine brought by families and then student contributions to the class baskets, followed by silent and live auction items provided by generous donors from the school or community. Then we put it all together with ticket sales from the same group for an amazing evening with a wonderful meal and great company. It should also be noted that the school staff are an integral part of the process and the silent auction items donated by teachers are always very popular picks. Special thanks to: Cheryl Carbol, Rana Jones, Linda Davis and the Elboya Staff.
If you missed it this year, you will not want to miss out in 2016.
On the heels of this collaborative success, we invite parents to join the Elboya Parent Council meetings which are hosted on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  There are a host of topics being discussed each month and you can be part of it.
The Oktoberfest committee gave it our all and the results were fun and financially amazing. Oktoberfest raised over $30,000 for supporting school initiatives. Great job!
Thank you for supporting Elboya!
For committee information or event follow-up, please contact Rhonda Fulton at www.mauibeachwalk.com

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
1.  Elementary Pizza Lunch Grade 1- 5
If you have not ordered pizza for your child please be sure to send a bagged lunch on Wednesday, November 5th.
Questions or concerns?  Please contact Carrie csfryer@mac.com or Christie christie9@shaw.ca
 2.  Virtual Learning Commons
Parents can find information about student tests, assignments and teacher blogs at Elboya School on the following link https://sites.google.com/a/educbe.ca/vlc/
3. Absences
We respectfully request that parents inform the school on the telephone absence line, 403-777-7760 ext. 1 which is available 24/7.  Each morning, Mrs. Jones' priority task is to check on the attendance of each child by 9:30 a.m.  The safety of each child is very important especially as winter approaches.
We are finding emails about attendance in teacher and administrator email accounts as well as in secretarial and general Elboya inboxes.  While email is convenient, we cannot guarantee that staff are able to check their email by 9:30 each morning.  For example, every Tuesday morning before school we have a staff meeting and it is unlikely that any staff member would be able to check their email by 9:30. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ATTENDANCE INFORMATION BY EMAIL. Thank you.
4. Being on time
A significant number of students are arriving late to school every morning. We understand the occasional problem that leads to a student being late-sometimes the weather is bad or there is an accident or other circumstances beyond our control. However, being late every day is not respectful of other students or teachers who are on time and disrupts the learning environment in classes. We ask your cooperation in students arriving no later than 8:45 so they can prepare for school which begins at 8:50 a.m. Being on time is an important life skill that all need to acquire.
Halloween Activities
On Thursday, October 30th, Elboya School had a number of fun Hallowe'en activities. Kindergarten through Grade 4 carved or decorated pumpkins which were judged by Mr. Coward's Grade 7-9 Homeroom students. The Concert Band performed the Haunted Clock and Mountain Troll for Kindergarten through Grade 4 before they paraded their costumes to Grade 5-9 classes. Grades 5-9 participated in a Costume Contest at lunchtime. All classes contributed socks filled with candy to Ronald McDonald House. The parents at Ronald McDonald House were overwhelmed with the generosity and want to thank staff and students at Elboya.
Haunted House – S. Park
The Halloween Haunted House put on by the Drama students was a spooktacular success!!! The small gym was transformed into an exscreamely scarey house. Thank-you to the Drama students for all their hard work, writing scenes and creating their own characters. YOU WERE ALL VERY SCAREY!!

Dear parents,
 Assembly
This morning we had a brief assembly for all students and staff. As with all assemblies, we sang “O Canada” led in this case by Aurora and Aidan. The content of the assembly included the following:
-Elboya School’s Canadian flag is flying at half mast to honour Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo who died this past week.
-As Remembrance Day approaches, we need to remember those who have fought and died for our freedom.
-This year we will again offer students and staff to bring in a photograph of a family member or friend who is or was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.
-As Elboya students and staff we can help our community and our country by being friendly and including others. We have many students who are new to Canada, Calgary or Elboya School. Except for a few native students, we are all immigrants to Canada.
-Our actions help to make others feel welcome and part of our community and this is important both in person and in online communications.
Space and Elboya School
This year we have around 611 students. The maximum I have seen at Elboya is 660. We still have a leased classroom, a woodworking room that is used twice a day and other rooms that are not used every period.  We are not using the library, the stage, cafeteria or the staff room for regularly scheduled classes.
The capacity of Elboya School is 700 according to the Calgary Board of Education.

Provincial Achievement Tests
Results for PATs have been published and full results will appear on Elboya’s website next week. Last June Grade 6 and 9 students wrote 16 tests. There are some very good results for both Standard of Excellence (over 80%) and Acceptable Standard (over 50%). A few examples are:
In Grade 6 English Language Arts, 94.7% passed the examination while in French Language Arts 96.6% passed. Grade 6 Mathematics had 91.2% of students passing.
In Grade 9, 97.4% of students passed the English Language Arts test and of those 46.2% of students achieved over 80%, which is truly outstanding. In Grade 9 Mathematics 93.6% of students passed and 33.3% of students achieved over 80% on the tests. Again, an excellent result. In Grade 9 Science 89.7% of students passed the test with 24.4% of students achieving the Standard of Excellence.
Each year following the publication of test results, we undertake an analysis of the results and set goals and put actions into place in order to improve our results.
Grade 3 students have just completed the first Student Learning Assessments this week. This has been an intensive experience for students and teachers with both written and digital tests in Language Arts and Mathematics. As the Calgary Board of Education is piloting these tests for Alberta Education, we have submitted feedback about the tests and hope for future modifications which will benefit students.

Oktoberfest
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who have contributed in any way.  Special thanks are due to Rhonda Fulton who took on this event at the last minute and who has worked very hard to bring it to fruition.
L. Davis, Principal, Elboya School
 Busing
Bus B has had some changes to its route which will take effect October 27th. An updated route was provided to all Bus B students and the updated map is on our website as well.
 Soccer Wrap-Up – M. Haines and K. Hadder
The girls will be playing the boys in a fun game on Monday October 27th at 3:45. Following the short game, the students will come in for pizza and some treats as a group. Everything should be finished by 5:00. Please let the coaches know if your child has any dietary restrictions.
 Halloween Activities – I. Coward, M. Haines
October Charity - Stuff Sock for a Sick Child
Students are being asked to bring a couple of store-bought, pre-wrapped, nut-free pieces of candy to contribute to their homeroom's Halloween sock.  Once the socks are stuffed, we will be taking them to Ronald MacDonald House to give to sick kids who are unable to go out trick-or-treating on Friday, October 31, 2014.
 K-4 Pumpkin Carving
Kindergarten through Grade 4 students will be given a pumpkin to carve on Monday, October 27th and they will have until Thursday, October 30th in the morning to complete it.  Mr. Coward's homeroom students will judge the pumpkins and pick three classes as winners. Classes will receive a pumpkin pie!
 Dress-up Day--Thursday, October 30th
Thursday, October 30th will be our Halloween Spirit Day.  All students are encouraged to wear their costumes. In Kindergarten through Grade 4, we celebrate all of the children.  There will be prizes awarded for best costume to one boy and one girl in each grade 5-9.  Parents should ensure that costumes are school appropriate, and that their children do not bring any toy or real "weapons" to school, even if they fit with the theme of their costume.
 Grade 6 and 9 PAT results -  D. Siakaluk
Schools have received the PAT results for Grade 6 and 9 students. Parent copies will be sent home with the Grade 7 students next week. Grade 9 results are sent to the high school that the students are currently attending. Elboya School results will be shared with parents next week.

Beginning November 3rd, students will place cafeteria orders through their homeroom or class. Students are also reminded to bring all the necessary cutlery in their lunches as cutlery is only provided for students who purchase a hot lunch.
