Dec 18 Weekly email to Parents

Dear Parents,

Today we finished up school for 2014 with a variety of activities. Besides regular classes, the Grade 8 and 9 Band under Mr. Irwin's direction offered a holiday themed music concert to students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Drama students presented skits to classes. Homeroom classes decorated their doors on the theme of holidays in countries around the world. Students created some beautiful doors and the photos will be up on the website soon. The winners were: Rm 4 Mr. Leblanc, Rm 12 Ms. Lewis, and Rm 27 Ms. Gagne. Congratulations!
Many thanks to the Grade 7-9 homeroom class of Ms. Sawchuk, the grade 5-6 homeroom class of Mr. Hadder and the Grade 1 class of Ms. MacGillivray who coordinated all student activities in of December. When the Food Bank representatives delivered our 16 boxes, they thought that number ambitious for a school of our size. It's a compliment to students, parents and staff that we filled all of the boxes and one more besides.  Students also raised about $751.86  for the Food Bank through the Candy gram project.
This past Monday, a set of parents and Elboya staff had a heart-stopping couple of hours when a student was missing. Fortunately everything turned out well. However, in the process of finding the child, seven staff members were involved in interviewing staff and students, systematically searching the school, the grounds, several local parks, Britannia shopping centre, local fast food outlets and Chinook Mall as well as in locating information and pictures of the child. We also notify the Area IV office of the Calgary Board of Education and in where advisable, contact the police. Our actions in these cases are governed by the Calgary Board of Education Missing Child protocol.
Every morning and afternoon, we review attendance and check the location of each of our 612 students. Thankfully the vast majority are in class learning.  If a student is not in school and we have not received a phone call, parents are contacted to confirm that the child is in their care. This can be a very time-consuming process, but an extremely important one in ascertaining the safety of every child.
With this recent experience in mind, we ask your cooperation in letting us know by phone by 8:30 a.m. at the very latest if your child will not be in school.  Students who are late must sign in. If students are leaving during the school day, parents are asked to send an explanatory note that the student can show to his/her teacher and the Main Office.
I wish our society provided a completely safe environment for children. It does not. Fortunately Elboya is in a very safe neighborhood, but even so we need to be vigilant to ensure that students are safe at school.
Finally, on behalf of the staff, I would like to thank parents who provided a delicious luncheon and box of cookies to all of Elboya's 44 staff members.  We wish each student and their family a happy enjoyable break.  We will meet students again on Tuesday, January 6, 2014.

Dec 12 Weekly email

December 12, 2014

Dear Parents,

The Kindergarten through Grade 4 winter concerts yesterday were a great success. Over 700 parents, grandparents and family members came to watch the students perform as well as the Grade 5 and 6 students at Elboya. This was a great opportunity for each class to showcase their musical and performance abilities and they were awesome. The concert yesterday concluded our major pre-Winterbreak activities which were the Band Concert for Grades 5-9, the two school dances for Grades 5-6 and 7-9, and collecting food for the Calgary Interfaith Foodbank. Other in school activities such as Ugly Sweater Day and Candy Grams continue till Thursday, December 18th.

Elboya students under the direction of Ms. Sawchuk's Grade 7-9 Homeroom, Mr. Hadder's Grade 5-6 homeroom and Ms. MacGillivray's Grade 1 class have been collecting for the Food Band and the students have filled 16 very large Food Bank boxes of donations. I would like to thank all students, parents and staff for their support of this very worthwhile project.
On behalf of all of the staff, we wish each student and their family an enjoyable Winter Break. See you on Tuesday, January 6th, 2015 when school recommences.

Ms. L. Davis
Principal

Weekly email November 28

November 28, 2014

 Dear Parents,

Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and student educbe.ca Gmail accounts

A reminder to parents that a year ago, Elboya school informed parents that CBE was adopting a new email service for students as the old email server and system had become obsolete and costly to maintain.   After an extensive investigation into the options available, the CBE chose to use Gmail within the Google Apps for Education infrastructure.  This provides students with more enhanced privacy protection than regular public Gmail accounts, and will allow students to connect with their peers and teachers in a safe environment.  Gmail within Google Apps for Education is an option that has already been implemented in many other educational jurisdictions and post-secondary institutions and is recognized as being a secure, robust and efficient student email platform.

Please see the attached letter for further information

EOE News

On November 27, forty three grade 7 & 8 EOE students spent two hours at the Calgary Climbing Centre learning to indoor wall climb. Students had a wonderful time climbing and pushing themselves to new heights. Grade 7 had an extra adventure as their bus broke down on the return trip to school - right in the middle of Macleod Trail!  Southland Transportation did an excellent job rescuing the excited students and one frazzled Mr. James. Southland’s Safety team were on site to ensure the safe movement from bus to bus.

The EOE 7 & 8 ski trip scheduled for December 3 has been postponed until February 4.  Students are reminded to get their forms in ASAP.

 Band Concert

A big thank you to all the Band Parents Association and parent volunteers to make this year’s band concert held at River Park Church a great success!  It is always moving to hear and see the progress from grade 5 who have only been learning to play since September. Band Festivals start in February and continue into March for grades 7-9.

 Library Learning Commons Club

We are starting a new student club in our Library Learning Commons. If your son or daughter has an interest in learning more about how a Learning Commons functions and participating in brainstorming ideas, providing student voice and completing some easy tasks, we would love to have them!  Organizational meetings will be Tuesdays at lunch (12:35) in the learning commons.  See Mrs. Hansen for more information.

Movember

Did you know prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men? This month is Movember, a month to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research. Teachers sported a very spiffy mustache and had their picture taken then displayed, students had to guess which teacher was which and then filled out a ballot for prizes. Thank-you to all those students who donated to this very worthy cause. Stay tuned, prizes will be awarded on Monday!!

Lates and Late Club – Mr. Siakaluk

Students arriving late to school continue to be a concern at Elboya and now that the weather has turned lates can become more common. Developing the habit of being on time is extremely important and critical for the workforce. On Monday, administration will implement a late club for students who are late. Students in grades 5-9 who arrive late need to stay after school for 30 minutes to make up for missed time. Just to clarify – late club will be for students who have an unexcused late. This does not include late school buses, extreme weather, traffic or appointments. This is for students who have chronic late concerns or who arrive to school late with no valid reason.
If your child is late to school and is in Grades K-4, they report directly to Ms. Jones who will record their name. If your child is in Grades 5-9 then they need to sign in the late book. We ask all parents to say their goodbyes outside the school or in the office. Parents are asked not to accompany their students to their classroom as this can be very disruptive to classes.

Dressing for Winter

Please be sure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Jackets, toques, mitts, scarves, boots, snow pants, etc. are highly recommended.
